“Some days, the water levels are high, making the water current flow swiftly with differences in the tides and can possibly cause accident. The Marine Office has created additional safety measures to be communicated to the tour boat operators for their safety and their passengers. There must be a sign telling the capacity of the pontoon installed at each pontoon. At least 4 swim rings must be supplied and installed and there must be sufficient lighting on the walkway.

“The boats must be checked before leaving the pier and there must be life jackets under every seat of the boat. The number of passengers must be strictly controlled. The boat captain must be sober and fit enough to take care of his crew and passengers; not exceed the speed – no drugs or alcohol.

“For people who are waiting to get on the boats, standing on the pontoon is not recommended. Get in the boat in an orderly fashion, always wear your life jacket and always listen to the instructions from the boat crew.

“In case of emergency, do not hesitate to contact the Marine Office for help at 076 391 174. The office is located at Chalong Pier and can be contacted 24/7. The frequency to contact the office is Phuket using VTMS, or Vessel Traffic Management System, is through VHF channel 16 at 156.475 for a normal report and 088-760-3754 (VTMS) or Moddam on channel F-AM-39, which is open 24/7, to report accidents.”
