Drama erupted among education professionals after an education centre director in the Isaan province of Surin was transferred to a better position, despite allegations of dereliction of duty.

The alleged misuse of power and inappropriate behaviour of a female education centre director, Nittaya Phupanna, came to light after the Facebook page, Watchdog Anti-corruption Organisation of Thailand, shared a picture and story about the official on September 18. The page stated in its caption:

“This non-formal and informal education centre director waits for her salary payment at home without working or attending the office. She works ‘non-formally and informally’ under her own pressure. She comes to work only when there is a major meeting or event, which is one to two times a month. This is happening in Srinarong district, Surin province.

“The director orders her subordinates to deliver documents to her home, which is 60 kilometres away from the education centre. She leaves teachers to manage activities at the centre without her supervision. This has been ongoing since 2019, when the pandemic began.”

Many netizens, especially those working in the government education sector, commented on the post.

“She must be dismissed from her position and repay her salary to the government.”

“If you are lazy, then quit. Don’t behave like this, because other government officials who work hard and don’t even have time for their families are affected.”

“Government officials like this should be expelled, not transferred.”

“Is she bedridden?”

This issue led to Nittaya being placed under investigation. She was transferred to another district until the investigation is concluded.

However, the controversy didn’t stop there, as Nittaya’s new position appears to be better and more prestigious than her previous role. Many education professionals questioned why Nittaya was moved to a larger educational area, even more significant than Srinarong district.

As of now, no relevant authorities responded to the latest criticism regarding Nittaya’s new role.
