Royal Forest Department investigates land nibbling in Chiang Rai

The Royal Forest Department zeroed in on the Cherntawan International Meditation Centre, amidst claims that they’ve illegally nibbled away at prime forest land in Chiang Rai’s Mueang district. The centre, helmed by the famed Phra Maha Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi, is under scrutiny for reportedly occupying more land than legally allowed.

The Royal Forest boss, Surachai Achalaboon, stormed into action, directing the Chiang Rai office to dig into these eyebrow-raising allegations. The centre, nestled amidst the Doi Pui National Forest Reserve, initially got a 113-rai nod from the National Office of Buddhism, later cheekily pushing for another 30 rai. But rumours suggest they’re lounging on a hefty 190 rai, potentially overstepping by 47 rai.

Surachai didn’t mince words about the consequences under the National Reserved Forest Act: Those caught red-handed face jail time of up to 20 years and can have their wallets lightened by up to 2 million baht. Encroach on more than 25 rai, and you’ll feel the law’s pinch, plus any seized land must be handed back.

Chiwaphap Chiwatham, ex-deputy head of the Royal Forest Department, likened this saga to the notorious Big Buddha debacle in Phuket, which ended in a deadly mudslide.

“Such constructions should be understated, not sprawling over a staggering 200 rai.”

Adding fuel to the fire, a viral clip showing Phra Maha Vudhijaya Vajiramedhi endorsing the iCon Group as a path to riches set tongues wagging. The group is now mired in scandal, accused of running a dodgy pyramid scheme with 18 top dogs, including the CEO, up on charges and over 4,000 victims counting their losses, reported Bangkok Post.

As for the 51 year old revered monk, Vajiramedhi, he’s remained tight-lipped amid the swirling controversy, with his meditation retreat and financial links now thrust into the national spotlight. The plot thickens as officials prepare to delve deeper, with the fate of the forest land and spiritual haven hanging in the balance.
