Thailand reported no new Covid-19 cases and no new deaths today, down from 3 yesterday, leaving totals at 3,040 confirmed cases and 56 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak in January. Panprapa Yongtrakul, spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration made the announcement this morning.

It’s the fourth day this month that there were no new confirmed cases. A total of 2,921 patients have recovered and returned home since the outbreak started, making the recovery rate 96%.

Globally, the total number of infections has passed 5.4 million confirmed cases and around 344,000 deaths have been reported.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus was first reported in China in late December, the world nows tracks a pandemic that rapidly spread west, first to parts of Asia, then Europe, seeding hot spots across Africa and exploding in North America. For a month, the US has now become the global epicentre, confirming more than 1.6 million cases, and the number of deaths closing in on the unpleasant milestone of 100,000 people.

Now the pandemic starts to surge in new territories. China yesterday reported no new coronavirus deaths or symptomatic cases for the first time since the virus emerged. But Covid-19 now rages in South America’s most populous countries.
