27 new Covid-19 cases in quarantine, 1 health worker infected by patient

1 local Covid-19 transmission was reported today and 27 new Covid-19 cases were detected in quarantine, according to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration. It’s the largest daily rise in cases since April. The total number of Covid-19 cases in Thailand is raised to 4,237 with 3,940 recoveries and 60 deaths. 237 people are currently receiving medical treatment for the coronavirus.

For the local transmission, a health worker tested positive for Covid-19 after coming in contact with an infected patient. The CCSA did not give any additional details on the case.

Out of the 27 cases detected in quarantine, 6 of them were Thais returning to Chiang Rai from the Myanmar border town Tachileik where many recent cases originated from, according to CCSA spokesperson Taweeslip Visanuyothin. He says most of the returnees had worked at entertainment venues in Tachileik like many of the other coronavirus patients.

Hundreds of Thais worked at entertainment venues in Tachileik and many fled the area due to the rise in Covid-19 infections. So far, 260 Thais returning from Tachileik have come back through the official border checkpoint. Some have crossed illegally, evading the mandatory quarantine and later testing positive for the virus. Taweeslip is calling on returnees who have crossed illegally to check in to quarantine.

“We will not send you to jail. We will send you to state quarantine facilities.”

21 other people tested positive for Covid-19 in quarantine after travelling from the United Kingdom, France, Azerbaijan, Germany, Ukraine, Poland, Bahrain, Indonesia, Sweden and Jordan.
