HBO doc claims Peter Todd is Bitcoin’s creator

Peter Todd denies being Satoshi Nakamoto amidst HBO documentary claims

Social media is buzzing with speculation following an HBO documentary’s bold assertion about the true identity of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” claims to have cracked the enigma shrouding the cryptocurrency world since 2009. The documentary posits that Canadian crypto expert Peter Todd is the mastermind behind the trillion-dollar invention.

Director Cullen Hoback confronted Todd with evidence in the HBO film, including a post that seemingly continues one made by Satoshi. Despite these claims, Todd firmly denied being Satoshi. He has been quoted saying, “I’m not Satoshi,” in a response on X. Todd mentioned he intentionally destroyed a significant number of bitcoins, feeding into a theory that Satoshi destroyed access to his stash of 1.1 million bitcoins, now valued at approximately $69 billion. This wealth would place Satoshi among the top 20 richest people globally if true.

However, Todd dismissed the allegations as “ludicrous.” He stated his involvement with Bitcoin was minimal due to his commitments to school and work. “I was working full time at a startup, while also finishing an arts degree, and then after that, starting a physics degree. I’ve talked about this publicly many times,” he clarified on X. Todd added that numerous individuals could potentially be Bitcoin’s creator, making it unlikely to ever definitively identify Satoshi.

Several figures from the computing world have been speculated to be Satoshi over the years. In 2014, Japanese-American Dorian Nakamoto was suggested, and in 2015, Australian computer scientist Craig Wright was investigated. Despite Wright’s claims that he was Satoshi, the community and a UK High Court judge found “overwhelming” evidence to the contrary. Tech billionaire Elon Musk was also suspected when a former SpaceX employee suggested it.

Crypto enthusiasts largely reject the documentary’s assertion, and the quest to uncover Satoshi Nakamoto’s true identity continues.
