Ishida to become Japan’s new prime minister after LDP vote win
Ishida aims to tackle inflation, improve wages, and address security threats
Former defence minister Shigeru Ishida is set to become Japan’s next prime minister after winning the Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership vote on Friday. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) holds a majority in the Lower House of Parliament, securing Ishida’s new role.
Fumio Kishida, who is stepping down after his term was marred by scandals, will see Ishida likely take office when Parliament reconvenes in October. Ishida emerged victorious against eight other candidates, securing 215 votes and narrowly defeating economic security minister Sanae Takaichi by 21 votes.
Born on February 4, 1957, Shigeru Ishida’s father was a government official and later governor of Tottori prefecture, while his mother was a teacher. After completing his education in Tottori, Ishida moved to Tokyo and studied law at Keio University. He began his career at Mitsui Bank before shifting to politics in 1983.

Political Career:
In 1986, Ishida became the youngest member of the House of Representatives, representing the Tottori prefecture as an LDP candidate. Throughout his career, he was often sidelined due to his differing views within the party. This marks his fifth attempt to lead the influential LDP. Over the years, he held various portfolios, including parliamentary vice minister of agriculture, defence minister, and minister for overcoming population decline and vitalizing local economies. Between 1993 and 1996, Ishida briefly left the LDP to join the Japan Renewal Party but rejoined the LDP after disagreements within the new party.
Ishida is known as a rival to former prime minister Shinzo Abe, having contested against him in the 2012 elections and criticising his policies. As he prepares to lead the world’s fourth-largest economy, Ishida aims to tackle inflation, improve wages, reduce reliance on nuclear energy, and address security threats from China and North Korea. He also plans to boost Japan’s low birth rate by expanding support for parents and revitalising regional economies.
After winning the party vote, Ishida stated, “I will do my utmost to believe in the people, to speak the truth with courage and sincerity, and to make this country a safe and secure place where everyone can live with a smile on their face once again.”
