British man dies after using tampons to stop snoring

Man's tragic death from using tampons to stop snoring

A British man tragically lost his life after inserting tampons in his nose in an attempt to stop snoring.

Mark Gleeson, aged 26, visited a doctor regarding his severe snoring, which had started after a road accident caused sinus issues.

His mother, Vera, mentioned that the family initially found his snoring amusing, but the doctor reportedly said there was little they could do. Afterward, Mark discussed potential solutions with his girlfriend, Tracey Lambert.

The couple considered using tampons to block the noise. Unfortunately, this idea turned fatal when Mark fell asleep with tampons in his nose.

An inquest in January 1996 revealed that on the night before his death, Mark and Tracey had spoken about using tampons. Tracey noted that Mark drank some wine, took sleeping tablets, and fell asleep on her Surrey sofa. When Tracey returned, she found him dead with tampons in his nose.

Pathologist Dr Peter Jackson identified asphyxiation, partly due to the tampons, and noted that the sleeping tablets exacerbated his breathing issues. Coroner Michael Burgess ruled the death accidental.

Snoring often links to obstructive sleep apnea, a sleep disorder. Apple aims to help detect this with its new Apple Watch Series 10. Men are more prone to snoring and sleep apnea than women. The Mayo Clinic suggests lifestyle changes like losing weight, avoiding alcohol before bed, treating nasal congestion, and not sleeping on one’s back.

Medical devices and surgery are also options for some, though they might not suit everyone.
