Tragically Hip docuseries debuts at Toronto film festival

TIFF hosts world premiere of The Tragically Hip docuseries

TORONTO, 5 September – The surviving members of The Tragically Hip attended the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday for the world debut of a docuseries about the iconic Canadian rock band and its late vocalist, Gord Downie. Downie, who passed away from cancer in 2017, is the focal point of the four-part series “The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal,” celebrating one of Canada’s most revered bands.

The docuseries delves into the band’s origins in Kingston, Ontario, where friends Gord Downie, Gord Sinclair, Rob Baker, Paul Langlois, and Johnny Fay formed the group in the 1980s. It chronicles their journey over four decades, highlighting their rise to fame, which saw them filling stadiums and earning nine No. 1 albums on the Canadian charts, along with numerous music awards.

The series also touches on the band’s efforts to gain popularity in the United States, where they never achieved the same level of fame as in Canada. Rather than focusing on the band’s struggles, the series celebrates their success and significance to Canadians, providing fans with an intimate look behind the scenes.

Lead guitarist Rob Baker found the final episode emotionally challenging. He mentioned he couldn’t bear to watch scenes from the band’s farewell performance with Downie. “It’s still very emotional for me to watch. I just can’t do that. I lived it, I can’t go back,” Baker shared on the red carpet.

The band’s appeal lies in their ability to capture the essence of the Canadian experience, according to Mike Downie, Gord’s brother and the series’ director. The song “Bobcaygeon,” named after a small town in Ontario, depicts an escape from urban life to rural Canada. Another beloved track, “Wheat Kings,” narrates the story of a man wrongly convicted of rape in Saskatchewan.

Mike Downie hopes viewers will understand the band’s importance and their lasting impact on Canadian culture. He remarked, “I hope people come to understand why this band mattered so much for so many people and the indelible mark they made on Canadian culture.”

The Tragically Hip emerged during a period when many Canadians sought validation from the United States, Mike Downie noted, adding that eventually, all of Canada claimed the band as their own.
