In Focus: Chalong art evolution

PHUKET: Believe it or not, chaotic Chalong is slowly evolving into a destination where people want to live and tourists want to visit. Thanks to entrepreneurs like Oliver Schibli, who has opened his own art gallery, Bubu Collection, next to Wine Connection, people now have somewhere to go to look at beautiful creations.

Oliver first arrived in Phuket from his native Switzerland in 2012, and was very impressed with the easy-going lifestyle of this tropical island.

“I’ve always worked on creative projects. I completed a four-year art program in Berne and worked as a sign maker, as I like the creativity and use of big color. I also work with sound and have organized electronic music festivals near the Matterhorn,” he says.

Music is important for Oliver when he paints or fashions a sculpture. He listens to what he calls ‘life lines’ while he paints.

“I work with a very strong color palette as the intensity puts me in a good mood, one that I want to share with others,” he explains.

He’s opened Bubu Collection, which he calls an Art of Living Gallery, as his customers can find a whole world of bright, colorful objects to animate their home or office.

Oliver’s paintings often celebrate the female form in a graphic style. He fashions art lights made from mannequins. His gallery has a world of interesting accessories, lacquer boxes, hats and even painted elephants. Currently, he is designing brightly colored scarves with custom-made boxes that can be given as unique, splendid gifts.

“I love my work as an artist and not being confined to an office job. I want to express my ideas through art and share them with my customers,” Oliver says.

Oliver welcomes guests to Bubu Collection. He is usually at his desk designing yet another exciting piece of art, always with a smile on his face. You can contact him for a personal viewing at info@bubucollection.com
