Four dead on Phuket roads by New Year’s Eve

PHUKET: Phuket’s road-death toll remained at four at the end of day three of the ‘Seven Days of Danger’ road-safety campaign, with the latest fatality occurring in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The death of Aeksalayut Inrith, 28, occurred in front of Supercheap Villa 5 on Chaofa West Road yesterday. He was driving under the influence and without a helmet. He was pronounced dead at Vachira Phuket Hospital.

There were a total of 32 reported injuries from road accidents during the three-day period, according to the official statistics provided by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Phuket Office.

The first day of the ‘Seven Days of Danger’ road-safety campaign witnessed the death of Pat Prayernyong, 48, (story here). Two additional deaths were added to the total on day two, when Mutslim Dakhan, 23, and Jielin Deng, 62, died in separate accidents (story here).

Updated Phuket statistics issued by the DDPM for the number of traffic offences during the first three days of the campaign are as follows:

– Riding a motorbike without wearing a helmet – 438
– Riding an unsafe motorbike – 11
– Driving under the influence of alcohol – 37
– Driver and/or passenger(s) failing to wear seat belts – 119
– Driving without [carrying] a valid driving license – 422
– Speeding – 12
– Failing to stop at a red light – 39
– Driving on the wrong side of the road (ghost-riding) – 38
– Overtaking in a restricted zone – 4
– Using a mobile phone while driving – 36
