Malaysia’s PN coalition nears agreement for six state elections

Negotiations among the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition’s component parties for the upcoming six state elections in Malaysia are nearly complete, with 97% of the seats agreed upon. PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar revealed that only five to six seats remain undecided out of the 245 they plan to contest in Kelantan, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Selangor, Kedah, and Penang.

“There is still time for us to resolve it,” Ahmad Samsuri said at a news conference in Kuala Terengganu. He also mentioned that PAS and its PN partner Bersatu are still discussing one remaining seat out of the 32 total in Terengganu. PAS is set to discuss its candidates for the state election tonight, though the time and location of the meeting remain unclear.

The PN coalition also includes Gerakan as a component party. The six states’ elections are due this year, as their five-year term expires. Selangor’s election is set to begin on June 25, concluding with Penang on August 2, unless their state assemblies are dissolved earlier.
