Malaysia anticipates improved US human trafficking report ranking
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has expressed optimism that Malaysia’s ranking in the US Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report will show improvement this year. Currently, Malaysia is placed in Tier 3, which puts the country in a disadvantageous position.
The TIP report is scheduled to be released tomorrow night, and the Home Ministry is set to have an engagement session with the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur before its publication. The minister shared this information with reporters at the Dewan Rakyat.
“I am confident that the ranking will improve, and we will continue to work hard to ensure that Malaysia is no longer in Tier 3,” said Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
The US TIP report is an annual assessment of countries’ efforts in combating human trafficking. Tier 3 is the lowest ranking, indicating that a country does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so.
Malaysia’s placement in Tier 3 has had negative consequences on the country’s reputation and its ability to receive certain types of assistance from the United States. An improved ranking could lead to better cooperation and support from the US in addressing human trafficking issues.
