Investigations ongoing into Northport container fire, false declarations suspected

Investigations have commenced to uncover the cause of a fire that destroyed 13 shipping containers owned by Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, which were located near Jalan Pelabuhan Utara, Port Klang. Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the Port Klang Authority (LPK) and Northport are conducting an in-depth investigation that will cover all aspects, including the possibility of false declarations.

“We still are investigating the cause of the fire and I do not want to speculate. If the declarations were false, then stern action will be taken against those responsible,” Loke said to the media after presenting the ISO 37001:2016 Certificate of Compliance for the Anti-Bribery Management Systems (ABMS) to the LPK.

Loke emphasised that his ministry is focused on ensuring the accurate declaration of goods in containers for safety purposes. He added that certain controls will be tightened to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
