Road safety crackdown for New Year
PHUKET: The Governor of Phuket, Udomsak Usawarangkura, has anounced plans for a police crackdown to reduce road accidents over the New Year holiday period from December 29 to January 4. A death toll of zero for Phuket is the aim following a campaign last New Year that saw three die on the roads, with 400 injured. At checkpoints around the island police will be enforcing laws on the wearing of helmets on motorcycles and seatbelts in cars, along with checks on blood alcohol content and driving licenses. An education campaign on road safety will also take place in schools. The governor plans to visit some of the checkpoints himself.
