Thailand’s Pride Month to attract 860,000 visitors

The Thai government is preparing to champion gender equality, anticipating that Pride Month activities will provide a significant economic boost.

Deputy government spokeswoman Kenika Ounjit highlighted that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s administration had announced this initiative as he assumed office.

“The government aims to foster a society that embraces diversity and equality across age, gender, religion, and social status, positioning Thailand as a premier Pride destination welcoming tourists globally.”

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Pride Month activities are projected to attract 860,000 visitors and generate at least 10 billion baht for the economy. Various Pride-related events are being organised by the TAT and private sector members in multiple provinces this month.

The Colourful Pride Festival in Chiang Mai will run from May 25 to June 30, alongside other parades and concerts. Additionally, Koh Samui in Surat Thani will host the Pride Nation Samui International Festival from June 24 to 29, featuring performances by both Thai and international LGBTQ+ artists.

PM Srettha inaugurated Bangkok’s Pride Festival 2024 at Siam Paragon on Friday, which will continue until Tuesday. He mentioned that Thailand’s landmark marriage equality bill is likely to be enacted soon, positioning Thailand as one of the first Asian countries to fully endorse equal rights. This development, he said, would enhance Thailand’s reputation as a welcoming destination for all travellers.

“The government will not just stop at the equality bill. We will also push for a gender recognition bill and measures to support sex workers, among other initiatives.”

The gender bill aims to introduce a gender-neutral option on official documents for those who do not identify strictly as male or female.

“We also hope that Thailand will be given a chance to host WorldPride events in 2030.”

Government spokesman Chai Wacharonke earlier noted that the government is targeting the LGBTQ+ community due to their high purchasing power, frequent travel habits, and tendency to stay longer in the country compared to other visitor groups, reported Bangkok Post.

Phuket’s Patong municipality announced its collaboration with Andaman Power Phuket Group to organise a Phuket Pride parade on June 9. The event, starting at 5pm at Thaweewong Road, Patong Beach, will be open to all attendees.
