Drug-fuelled biker blames exhaustion from work for injuring 2 cops
Bang Khen Police Station arrested the 25 year old Thai man, Sudkhet, yesterday, September 26, at around 6.30pm near Soi Phahonyothin 48 in the Bang Khen district of Bangkok after he caused a motorcycle accident, injuring two police officers.
Police Sergeant Wittawat Martmuntree suffered a broken finger, while Police Sergeant Ittiphon Upmano sustained a fractured clavicle. Sudkhet was also injured in the accident, with wounds and scratches across his body.
Police searched Sudkhet and his motorcycle and found nine Yaba tablets in his possession. However, Sudkhet insisted he had not yet used the drug and emphasised that the cause of the accident was exhaustion from work.
Sudkhet confessed that he bought the drug from a dealer named Beer, who was well-known among drug users in the Bang Khen area. While riding his motorcycle home, he felt exhausted and eventually crashed into the two police officers, who were travelling in the opposite direction on a motorcycle.
The police did not reveal whether they conducted a drug test to confirm Sudkhet’s claim. The legal punishment issued against the suspect was also not included in the report.
In a similar case, Sudkhet could face imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both. However, Sudkhet could avoid the above punishment if he participates in a rehabilitation programme.
In a related report on driving while under the influence of drugs, two Thai students were killed and another 13 injured in the Sadao district of Songkhla province in February, after a drug-addicted driver crashed his pickup into a roadside pavilion where students were attending a Boy Scout activity.
Another drug user claimed the lives of two students in the Isaan province of Sa Kaeo in May. The suspect crashed his pickup into a baht bus carrying students to school in the morning. Another 21 students in the vehicle were injured.
