Southeast Asian airlines will soon have the freedom to make multiple stops within ASEAN member states, marking a significant shift from current regulations that only permit direct return flights between destinations.

Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that this change will be implemented once all ASEAN member states sign Protocol 5 on Own Stopover Rights.

Loke explained in a press conference that the protocol will allow airlines to make intermediate stops at various ASEAN airports before continuing to other regional destinations.

“For instance, a flight departing from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore can proceed to Bali, Indonesia, and from there continue to other ASEAN destinations.”

The announcement came during the 30th Asian Transport Ministers (ATM) and the 58th Senior Transport Officials Meetings (STOM). Currently, all ASEAN members except Myanmar and Indonesia have signed Protocol 5.

Loke emphasised the protocol’s benefits, stating it will enhance regional air connectivity while providing airlines with greater operational flexibility.

“This initiative will promote tourism and boost trade by offering more seamless and convenient air travel options across the region.”

He noted that Asian carriers, including Malaysian operators, stand to benefit significantly given their extensive regional route networks.

The minister indicated that the protocol will be circulated to the remaining unsigned member states, with implementation expected by 2025 once all signatures are secured, reported the Nation.
