Woman tricked into 10 million baht debt after friend’s betrayal
A 41 year old woman devastated by the betrayal of a close acquaintance has found herself burdened with over 10 million baht in debt after her personal information was used to secure loans. She appeals to the police for justice and help.
Krisyaniporn, from Sankhaburi in Chai Nat province, tearfully recounted her ordeal. She explained that a woman named Mat, approximately 40 to 45 years old, had befriended her and moved in with her for nearly a year, gaining her trust. Mat then used this trust to steal her personal information and take out loans in her name totalling over 10 million baht (US$300,090).
Krisyaniporn revealed that Mat initially pretended to be in financial distress and persuaded her to assist in various ways. Without suspecting foul play, Krisyaniporn helped Mat by receiving gold and taking photos with it as proof for loan guarantors.
Mat also stole her cheque book, mobile phone, and ID card, altering the photo on the ID before using it to secure illegal loans and participate in informal money-lending schemes. Mat then disappeared, leaving Krisyaniporn to face the consequences.
The money from these transactions was transferred to an old account of Krisyaniporn’s, which she had not used but had not closed either. Mat used this account to handle all the borrowed money, resulting in creditors now demanding repayment from Krisyaniporn.
She faces daily harassment from nearly 10 creditors, each demanding substantial interest payments, which she finds impossible to meet. Despite not using any of the borrowed money, Krisyaniporn is now being threatened with lawsuits.
Debt fraud
“All the financial transactions were directed to an account of mine that I hadn’t used in years but hadn’t closed. Mat used it to launder all the borrowed funds, making me appear as the perpetrator. Now, I am being chased by nearly 10 creditors daily, each demanding huge interest payments that I cannot afford.
“I am now a scapegoat, saddled with over 10 million baht in debt. I could perhaps manage the smaller amounts, but this is insurmountable. I’ve lost my job and can’t eat or sleep. I think about ending my life multiple times a day just to escape this nightmare.”
Krisyaniporn is appealing for assistance from the media, relevant organisations, experts, and lawyers to help her escape this unjust situation. She has already filed a complaint with the Sankhaburi Police Station in Chai Nat province, seeking justice and relief from a crime she did not commit, reported KhaoSod.
“I want to tell Mat, why did you do this to me? I trusted you, let you stay with me, and you betrayed me like this. To those who lent money to Mat or participated in her schemes, I want to say that I have no intention of running away. My home is here, my work is here, and I will not pay because I did not use a single baht of the borrowed money. Please understand my plight.”
Krisyaniporn urged Mat to come forward and take responsibility for her actions at the Sankhaburi Police Station.
