Paklok community release new marine life to counter over-fishing in the region
The Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong attended activities yesterday (May 8) at the Baan Para Pier in Paklok at 4pm. Joining him were the Chief of the Phuket office of the Department of Fisheries, Kowit Kaoean and others.
Mr Kowit says, “Our marine resources are being degenerated and decreased as illegal fisheries equipment continue to be used and there are many fisheries activities putting demands on our marine eco system. People in the community are now wanting to take part to preserve our marine resources.”
“The Governor joined with us to release five million flower crabs and 10,000 shellfish. Thirty sets of ‘Fish Aggregating Devices’ or fish houses were also installed for baby fish to live when they’re at risk from larger predators. When these marine species grow big enough fishermen can catch them for selling. We are trying to stabilise the economy of the smaller fishermen in Phuket’s community,” he explained.
There are four communities in Ao Para which are Baan Laemsai, Baan Para, Baan Ao Kung and Lang Dang community. In total there are about 3,000 people, most of them reliant on local fishing in the area. Activities like this will help to stabilise their income and their local lives will be better,” he noted.
