The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) forecast that Thailand, particularly the northern and northeastern regions, will experience cold to very cold weather, with Bangkok and its surrounding areas seeing temperatures drop to as low as 16 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the south is facing rough sea conditions with waves exceeding 3 metres.

As of today, January 14, the strong high-pressure system covering upper Thailand and the South China Sea is weakening. This results in morning fog across upper Thailand, yet the north and northeast continue to experience cold to very cold weather. The central region, including Bangkok and its vicinity, as well as the east and upper south, will have cool to cold conditions.

Residents in mountainous areas are particularly advised to take precautions against the severe cold, as temperatures in these regions can fall between 2 and 7 degrees Celsius, with frost possible in some areas. People are urged to maintain their health in light of the chilly weather and to be cautious of potential fire hazards due to dry conditions. Additionally, travellers should be wary of foggy conditions.

The strong northeast monsoon influencing the Gulf of Thailand, the south, and the Andaman Sea is subsiding, resulting in reduced rainfall in the south. However, the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are witnessing strong winds, with waves in the Gulf reaching 2 to 3 metres and exceeding 3 metres during thunderstorms. The Andaman Sea has waves of 1 to 2 metres and 2 to 3 metres offshore during storms.

Southern residents, particularly on the eastern coast, should be cautious of coastal waves. Mariners are advised to navigate carefully and avoid areas with thunderstorms. Small boats in both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea should remain ashore for at least one more day.

The current weather conditions are contributing to moderate to high levels of particulate matter and haze accumulation in upper Thailand due to light winds hindering air dispersion.

The eastern coast will have waves of about 2 metres, increasing during thunderstorms, and the western coast will see thunderstorms in 10% of the area, mainly in Trang and Satun, with waves of 1 to 2 metres, increasing offshore to 2 to 3 metres during storms, reported KhaoSod.
