Iconic Thai heritage closing for renovation: Kamthieng House Museum shutting down
The historic Kamthieng House Museum, a cultural gem in the heart of Bangkok, is set to close its doors for a major renovation.
The Siam Society, custodians of the beloved Kamthieng House Museum, has dropped a bombshell by announcing its closure for extensive renovations starting from December 30. The delay in the restoration, the society reveals, was a meticulous process of selecting the right craftsmen to preserve the essence of this Northern-style masterpiece.
Built in the mid-1800s in Chiang Mai, the Kamthieng House Museum has stood the test of time. A gift to the Siam Society in 1963, the teakwood marvel was inaugurated by the late King Rama IX. Now, after decades of welcoming tourists year-round, it’s time for a much-needed makeover to restore its former glory.
As the house nears its third century, the challenges it faces are immense, primarily from the ageing process and the relentless construction surrounding it. The structural stability, especially the roof, demands immediate attention. The Siam Society has put out a call for financial support, urging enthusiasts to contribute towards preserving this historical treasure.
To ensure the Kamthieng House Museum survives for generations to come, the Siam Society welcomes donations. The restoration project requires substantial funding to strengthen the core structure. Contributions can be made through transfers to THE SIAM SOCIETY at TMBThanachart Bank (ttb), Asoke Branch, Savings Account No. 053-2-03946-8. Traditional Thai houses are vanishing in Bangkok, with many converted into museums for preservation. As modernity takes over, these historical remnants are endangered. Only a handful of private houses remain, and the Kamthieng House Museum stands as a symbol of the fading Thai architectural legacy, reported Thai PBS World.
