Ex-Thai actress accuses British husband of swindling 350,000 baht
A former Thai actress accused her British husband of infidelity and swindling her out of her 350,000 baht life savings.
The 40 year old ex-actress, Ladda Khantiphok, reached out to several news agencies to publicise her story and to help her find a lawyer to take legal action against her British husband, Ian. Ladda said she is struggling to make a living, wants her money returned, and seeks a divorce.
Ladda explained that she met Ian via a dating application in April 2019. Ian travelled to Thailand to meet her for the first time in July of the same year, and they subsequently registered their marriage in April 2020. She made known that she neither sought a wedding ceremony nor a dowry from him.
Ladda stated that Ian worked as a musician on a cruise ship and visited her at her home in Chanthaburi province three to four times a year.
In 2022, Ian reportedly sought financial support from her, claiming his salary was delayed. He initially requested 120,000 baht from Ladda. Later, in April 2021, he asked for an additional 200,000 baht.
Ladda began to doubt her husband’s honesty after he failed to visit her for two years. Matters took a turn when she was contacted by a foreign woman who enquired about her relationship with Ian. When Ladda identified herself as Ian’s wife, the other woman insisted that she too was married to him.
Ladda said she does not want Ian back but wants him to return to Thailand to sign divorce papers and repay the 320,000 baht he owes her.
The former actress said the money represented her life savings, earned through various jobs. She previously worked as an actress in dramas and advertisements but now makes a living by running a laundry service and selling drinks for 5 baht per glass.
Ladda revealed that she had sought assistance from a well-known news Facebook page but the administrator declined to help her, instead suggesting she find a new foreign husband. She expressed hope that a lawyer or relevant officials would assist her in pursuing legal action against Ian.
ThaiRath reported that Ladda gained fame from an anti-alcohol consumption advertisement campaign by the Thai Health Promotion Foundation in 2005. She subsequently appeared in other advertisements and drama series.
