Thaksin hospitalisation ethics probe to conclude by May

An ethics investigation into the doctors involved in the hospitalisation of Thaksin Shinawatra at Police General Hospital is progressing on schedule, according to the Medical Council of Thailand.

Professor Doctor Prasit Watanapa, Vice President of the Medical Council, addressed the media yesterday, April 11, clarifying that there has been no delay in the proceedings. He noted that a subcommittee is managing the case, which is expected to reach a conclusion by May. The investigation is initially set for six months, with an optional two-month extension if needed. Presently, there are no signs that an extension will be required.

“We are committed to resolving this case promptly and in accordance with established regulations to avoid future issues. A press conference will be arranged once the investigation concludes.”

The investigation’s outcomes will be forwarded to the public health minister, who acts as the council’s special president. If the special president raises no objections, the findings will be deemed final. Should there be any objections, a decision will require a two-thirds majority vote from the Medical Council’s committee. Failing that, the special president will make the final decision.

Dr Amon Leelarasami, chair of the subcommittee, mentioned that his team recently received additional crucial documents. He confirmed that the investigation is supported by numerous documents and that sufficient information has been gathered to proceed.

“We recognise the public interest in this matter and assure everyone that our work is conducted without interference, adhering to medical ethics standards.”

The investigation was launched in response to complaints from civil society groups questioning the actions of medical teams at the Department of Corrections Hospital and Police General Hospital. The concerns arose from Thaksin’s immediate transfer from a police facility to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with “serious health conditions” needing special care, leading to his hospitalisation until the conclusion of his prison term, reported Bangkok Post.
