Mandrake takes early lead in King’s Cup

KATA: Nick Burns and Fred Kinmonth’s Mandrake from Hong Kong won the first race in the Racing Class in this year’s King’s Cup Regatta with a provisional corrected lead of 28 minutes ahead of Ray Roberts’s Drumstick.

Bill Bremner’s Foxy Lady finished third in the class with a corrected time of 5 hrs 44 min 56 s, 1 min 58 sec in front of John Thornton’s Mahligai, with Neil Pryde’s Hi Fi finishing a surprising fifth at 5:47:14.

Hi Fi‘s poor result comes just week after the crew won the IRC Racing Class in the Malaysian Raja Muda International Regatta for the second consecutive year.

In IRC 1 class, John Vause’s Ruby Tuesday outclassed Mike Downard’s Switchblade to win today’s race, while Rhythm Stick finished third.

The Royal Thai Navy claimed 1st and 3rd places in the IRC 2 class, with Merv Goddings’ Master Blaster in bewteen them.

In IRC 3, Kevin Gillow’s Minx took top honors, with Sumatra and Bourgeois Tag finishing second and third respectively.

The crew on Pla Loma made plain their intentions with a clear win in the the Sports Boats class. Provisional results for places two and three had still to be ratified by the racing committee at the time of upload.

Another surprise came in the Multihull 1 class, with Mark Pescott’s latest Firefly design, Moto Inzi, finishing third. Radab Kanjanavit’s Cedar Swan won today’s race with Henry Kaye’s The Sting finishing second.

However, Pescott claimed some fame today as his earlier designs, Cerberus and Chimera finished first and second respectively in the Multihull 2 class. Allocha finished third.

In the Premier class, Intrigue stole the show from Stormvogel to take top honors, while Silvertip finished third.

Provisional results in the remaining classes were:

Ocean Rover: 1. Sanook, 2. Silvia, 3. Asri.

Classic: 1. Shockwave 1, 2. Aquavit III, 3. Jemini Jo.

Bareboat Charter: 1. Constanza, 2. Intan, 3. Jigsaw.

Sunsail One Design: 1. Princess Athena, 2. Princess Christina, 3. Princess Isabella.
