Islands off Phuket’s east coast next up in beach cleanup

PHUKET: The islands of Koh Naka Yai and Koh Naka Noi are the next targets in the great Phuket beach cleanup, which has now spread to sands on and off the island’s east coast.

Officials planned to visit the islands this afternoon but were informed by a local official that residents there had started clearing illegal beach structures on their own, confirmed Pa Khlok Subdistrict Administration (OrBorTor) Mayor Panya Sampaorat.

“We will check on them again tomorrow. If structures are still standing, we will take them down
ourselves, and may take legal action against the residents,” Mr Panya added.

“We are following direct orders from the NCPO to clear all illegal buildings on beaches in order to bring back the beauty of nature to everyone.”

East coast locals have jumped to the task of clearing illegal structures off their beachfronts. Earlier today, Ao Por locals helped officers dismantle shacks, sun shades and stalls set up along their seashore (story here).
