Bangkok secured a spot in the top 20 dream destinations for expat talent worldwide, as revealed in the 2024 Decoding Global Talent Report. The capital of Thailand claimed 17th position in the prestigious report.

Published by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in conjunction with recruitment website The Network and digital recruitment platform The Stepstone Group, the report delves into workforce mobility, the inclination to relocate internationally for employment, and coveted destinations for global workers.

The top ten cities where workers dream of relocating are: London (UK), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Dubai (UAE), Abu Dhabi (UAE), New York (US), Berlin (Germany), Singapore, Barcelona (Spain), Tokyo (Japan), and Sydney (Australia).

Only nine cities in the Asia-Pacific region made the top 30, with Bangkok 17th. The other cities are Singapore (7th), Tokyo (10th), Melbourne (14th), Auckland (16th), Beijing (25th), Kuala Lumpur (26th), and Osaka (30th). Bangkok ranks 6th among the most desired destinations for work in the Asia-Pacific region.

The report notes that the number of people seeking work abroad increased, despite concerns over economic and geopolitical issues. The number of people who moved to work abroad increased from 21% in 2020 to 23% this year based on 150,000 survey participants from 188 countries around the world.

The three primary reasons for seeking work abroad are greater financial and economic opportunities, better career advancement prospects, and improved quality of life.

The top three reasons for staying in one’s current country are the inability to bring family members or partners abroad, strong emotional attachment to the current country, and the cost of relocation.

The report also highlights that 92% of employers worldwide consider attracting expat talent important for their companies, recognising that multicultural work environments foster innovation and success.

Apart from work, Bangkok and other provinces in Thailand are also the dream destinations when it comes to travel. In a related report, Agoda announced that Thailand is the most popular destination for European tourists, followed by four other Asian countries, including Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Phuket, Bangkok, and Krabi were the provinces of greatest interest to Agoda users. According to Agoda, the provinces excel in relaxation, adventure and culture, attracting European tourists, especially during the summer holidays.
