Lifeguards issue warning against marine activities

PHUKET: Lifeguards issued a marine activities warning to tourists and island residence following the death of a teen fisherman whose body was recovered yesterday evening (story here).

“Rough seas claimed another life this year. I urge everyone to avoid marine activities of any type, especially swimming and fishing, during these current weather conditions,” said Kata-Karon Chief Lifeguard Uten Singsom.

Mr Uten pointed out that even those not planning on entering the water, but coming in close contact with the ocean are at risk during this period of time.

“You may slip on the rocks or even be struck by a large wave and taken out to sea,” Mr Uten said. “We don’t want to see anymore lives lost in our waters. Please take the necessary steps to ensure your own safety.”

A small boat warning remains in place for Phuket, banning vessels less than 10-meters long from leaving Phuket for Phi Phi or Racha Island (story here).
