Comedian Jocelyn Chia slammed for mocking MH370 tragedy and Malaysia

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has criticised Singaporean comedian Jocelyn Chia for making insensitive and offensive jokes about Malaysia and the MH370 tragedy. He emphasised that no rational person could accept such derogatory and insulting humour, even in the name of freedom of speech.

“We hope it is an isolated case, the Singapore government has issued a public apology and some of our leaders have also publicly condemned the action,” said Saifuddin Nasution Ismail during the Townhall Ikon Madani at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). He added that making fun of events relating to the loss of life and grief should not be a subject of humour.

The Home Minister’s comments came in response to a question from a student who wanted to know his views on the actions of the standup comedian. A video clip of Chia’s performance, titled ‘Singapore vs Malaysia,’ recently went viral on social media, sparking outrage and condemnation.

The Townhall Ikon Madani programme is an initiative of Yayasan Prihatin Nasional (PRIHATIN) in collaboration with the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation and the Federal Territories Taqwa Foundation. The programme aims to engage students and future graduates in institutions of higher learning in conversation and dialogue.
