Call for security boost at Johnnie Walker Classic

PHUKET CITY: Ministry of Tourism and Sports Permanent Secretary Sakthip Krairiksh has called for increased security at the Johnnie Walker Golf Classic, to be played at Blue Canyon Golf Club March 1 to 4.

The call was made at a meeting with representatives of major sponsor Diageo Moet Hennessy (Thailand) on February 2 and senior provincial government figures, including Phuket Vice-Governor Worapot Rathasrima, Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (OrBorJor) Vice-President Suthin Uthaitamrong and senior police officers.

“We think that the security of the golfers, as well as Thai and foreign tourists who will come to see this event, is very important. I would like to ask for co-operation from police or any relevant organizations to help provide security at this important event,” a spokesman for the representatives said.

V/Gov Worapot said, “I will co-ordinate with Phuket police, Phuket Tourist Police and other organizations to come up with a security plan that we will discuss and present at the next meeting.”

At the time of going to press a date for the follow-up meeting had yet to be set.
