Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s gifted crown to the Jeshoreshwari temple in Satkhira, Bangladesh, has been stolen. Local authorities are currently investigating the theft. The crown, presented by Modi during his visit in March 2021, went missing from the temple in Shyamnagar.

The theft occurred at about 2 pm on Thursday. Temple priest Dilip Mukherjee had left after the day’s worship, and cleaning staff later discovered the crown was missing from the deity’s head.

Inspector Taizul Islam of Shyamnagar Police Station stated that they are examining the temple’s CCTV footage to identify the culprit. The crown, made of silver and gold-plated, was a significant gift from Modi.

Jeshoreshwari Temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peeths located across India and neighbouring countries, is dedicated to Goddess Kali. The name “Jeshoreshwari” translates to “Goddess of Jeshore.”

During his 2021 visit, Modi placed the crown on the deity’s head as a symbolic gesture. This visit was his first international trip after the COVID-19 pandemic. Modi also shared a video of this visit.

Situated in Iswaripur village, the temple has a rich history. It was initially constructed by a Brahman in the 12th century and later renovated by Lakshman Sen in the 13th century and Raja Pratapaditya in the 16th century.
