A man accused of attempting to kill a woman in a street attack is also the first suspect charged under new ‘dognapping’ laws. Julian Mead, 40, faces charges of attempted murder, threatening with an offensive weapon in public, and taking a dog to keep it from its lawful owner.
This marks the first case under the Pet Abduction Act (2024), effective since August. Emergency services responded to Bells Lane in Cinderhill, Nottingham, around 9.30pm on October 1, finding a woman with severe injuries.
The woman, in her 40s, was hospitalised with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Later, a dog was reported stolen from a nearby property.
Mead appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody until his appearance at Nottingham Crown Court on November 6.
Detective Inspector Julian Eminson-Ferry described the incident as a very serious assault and expressed satisfaction with the charges. The investigation continues, and the stolen dog remains missing. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.
