Israel warns of lethal response to Iran missile attack

Israel promises a strong, surprising reaction to Iran's recent missile attack

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant warned on Wednesday of a “lethal” and “surprising” response to Iran’s recent ballistic missile attack. Addressing troops, Gallant said, “Our strike will be lethal, precise, and above all, surprising. They won’t understand what happened and how. They will see the results.” He added, “Whoever strikes us will be harmed and pay a price.”

Israel has promised a strong reaction to Iran’s October 1 missile attack, which Iran claimed was in retaliation for the killing of Hasan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah. Israel is consulting with its key ally, the United States, to determine the scale and intensity of its response.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the situation with US President Joe Biden in a 30-minute phone call on Wednesday. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described the conversation as “direct and very productive,” noting that the leaders were open about their disagreements. Biden condemned Iran’s attack and encouraged renewed diplomacy concerning Gaza. He also reiterated Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah.

Netanyahu’s office confirmed the call but did not provide specific details. Both leaders agreed to stay in close contact, with Biden urging Netanyahu to minimise civilian harm in Lebanon. Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon mentioned that the call was “positive” and appreciated the U.S. support. In a separate statement, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller advised Israel against conducting Gaza-like military operations in Lebanon, stressing that such actions should not resemble Gaza’s outcomes.

The US expressed particular concern about the humanitarian situation in north Gaza, where Israeli forces have intensified their attacks to prevent Hamas from regrouping. Increased shelling has blocked roads and hindered aid delivery in Jabaliya, northern Gaza. “We are incredibly concerned about the humanitarian situation in all of Gaza, especially in the north,” Miller said, highlighting ongoing urgent discussions between the US and Israel.
