Federal authorities are on the hunt for the individual responsible for fatally shooting a sea lion in California this week. In a press release dated 9 October, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported the discovery of the injured sea lion at Bolsa Chica State Beach on Monday.
Officials captured images of the sea lion, which was still alive at the time. The animal, a male, was approximately 2 years old. Typically, sea lions live between 20 and 30 years. NOAA noted that the young male was “found alive between lifeguard stations 22 and 23.”
The Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Orange County rescued the sea lion. However, it succumbed to its injuries the following day. Examinations revealed a recent gunshot wound on the sea lion’s back. Sea lions are generally inquisitive and not aggressive towards humans. The suspect, if identified, will face charges under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).

The MMPA “prohibits the harassment, hunting, capturing or killing of sea lions and other marine mammals,” according to NOAA. The act does permit non-lethal methods to deter marine mammals from damaging private property, such as fishing equipment, provided these methods do not harm or kill the animals.
Authorities believe multiple witnesses were present at the Orange County beach during the incident. NOAA is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information that leads to the suspect’s conviction or a civil penalty.
