Hurricane Milton threatens record storm surge in Florida

Florida evacuates as Hurricane Milton nears with record storm surge

A chilling simulation reveals the severe storm surge impact expected when Hurricane Milton strikes. Hurricane Milton, swiftly advancing towards the Florida Peninsula, reclaimed its Category 5 status earlier this evening. Millions are evacuating vulnerable regions and bracing for the storm.

The National Hurricane Center has labelled Milton an ‘extremely life-threatening situation’ for Florida’s western coast. Specialist John Cangialosi warned, “Milton could become one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida.”

The National Hurricane Center predicts storm surges along parts of Florida’s west coast tomorrow. The Weather Channel shared a simulation today, showing a potential ‘record-setting surge over 9 feet’ in the Tampa Bay Area.

Using FloodFX simulation technology, meteorologist Stephanie Abrams from The Weather Channel depicted a 9-foot surge in Tampa Bay. As animated water rose behind her, Abrams explained: “At 3 feet above normally dry ground, water is already life-threatening. It’s too late to evacuate. Water this high can knock you down, make cars float, and hinder driving. Homes and businesses’ first floors are flooded.”

Abrams continued, “At 6 feet, above most people’s height, vehicles get swept away, and structures start to fail. The water can contain sharp glass, debris, and chemicals.” Abrams added, “Some areas might see surge values between 10 to 15 feet,” as the water simulation ominously rose behind her. “At this level, first floors are completely flooded, and few places remain safe.”

Twitter users described the simulation as ‘terrifying,’ urging local residents to evacuate if they haven’t already. “This simulation of Hurricane Milton’s storm surge is a wake-up call to leave if you haven’t already,” one user wrote. Another added, “I felt claustrophobic just watching it.”

A different user noted, “That visualization shows static water, no movement. The surge will have 9-foot swells and water levels with FORCE.” To support the American Red Cross in providing aid to crisis victims, you can donate here.
