Six injured in partial collapse of Little India shophouses

Shophouses near Mustafa complex collapse; six sustain minor injuries

Six individuals sustained injuries when two shophouses partially collapsed in Singapore’s Little India precinct on Tuesday morning. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported the incident on Facebook, stating it was informed around 1:30 am about the collapse at 84 and 85 Syed Alwi Road, near the well-known Mustafa shopping complex.

SCDF arrived promptly and began searching the area for anyone trapped under the debris, employing two search dogs and a drone to assist the operation. Firefighters used a ladder to rescue a person stranded on the second floor of one of the shophouses due to a blocked staircase.

Paramedics assessed two people with minor injuries before sending them to the hospital. Four others with minor injuries chose not to be hospitalised, according to SCDF.

Passersby had reportedly heard a loud blast during the collapse, prompting the deployment of a firefighting machine to disperse any possible buildup of flammable gases using its water mist spray function. SCDF confirmed that no one was found trapped under the debris.

Google Maps indicates that 84 Syed Alwi Road houses Paakashala Singapore, an Indian vegetarian restaurant, while 85 Syed Alwi Road is home to Nirja Mega Mart, a grocery and vegetable retailer. Paakashala suffered severe damage, with wires hanging from the ceiling and a deformed outdoor tent, as reported by Channel News Asia.
