Influencer banned from TikTok for promoting ‘skinny’ lifestyle

Schmidt faces backlash for money-saving tips on children's clothing

Liv Schmidt, a 22-year-old influencer, has been banned from TikTok for promoting an unhealthy “skinny” lifestyle and now faces backlash for her money-saving strategy of shopping in the children’s section. Schmidt was removed from the platform in late September due to her dangerous weight loss tips and encouragement of disordered eating habits.

Schmidt received criticism for her videos depicting minimalistic meals, such as her “skinny girl breakfast” that includes only protein shakes and electrolyte drinks, as listed on her Amazon page. Recently, she showcased a skirt from Zara, purchased from the children’s section for $35 less than the adult version. Her caption claimed, “The biggest money-saving hack when shopping is children’s clothing. Designers have kids t-shirts for $200 instead of $1000 for adults – for a cute baby tee.”

Following the backlash, Schmidt began discussing obesity in America on her new TikTok account while emphasizing her physique more than before. One video caption read, “In a world where u can be anything be skinni,” and she claimed her accessory for the night was her flat stomach. To evade content flagging, she uses the misspelling ‘skinni’ instead of the correct spelling.

In another post, Schmidt stated she was banned for being “too skinni” for the platform. Users on X quickly criticised her advice to her young followers. One user commented, “i like her tips but she is an awful person, i was in her skinny girl gc and she said some vile things… just one example is she called a girl in ed recovery fat.” Another user posted, “liv schmidt is insaneee. she triggers me sm & this video is def gonna remain stuck in my head her before is how i’m built.”

Schmidt denies having an eating disorder but mentioned she understands feeling uncomfortable in one’s body due to a generalized anxiety disorder she has had since elementary school.
