Boris Johnson calls for UK referendum on ECHR membership

Johnson supports ECHR referendum, criticises its impact on UK immigration policy

Boris Johnson has called for a referendum on the UK’s membership in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). This issue has become central in the Conservative Party leadership race.

Johnson, the former prime minister, supports the idea of a referendum, arguing that the ECHR has restricted UK immigration policy, especially concerning the small-boats crisis. He stated that the ECHR does not offer protections beyond what UK laws already provide.

When asked about his support for a referendum, Johnson told The Daily Telegraph that the ECHR has become overly interventionist, attempting to override national jurisdiction. He believes there is a strong case for a referendum and thorough discussion on the matter.

Johnson aligned with Lord Sumption, a former Supreme Court judge, who argued that UK domestic laws sufficiently protect human rights. Sumption claimed the convention imposes rights without a democratic mandate.

Johnson also referenced his maternal grandfather, Sir James Fawcett, who was once president of the ECHR. He noted that circumstances have significantly changed since Fawcett’s tenure.

Though Johnson has not endorsed any Tory leadership candidate, his remarks are seen as supportive of Robert Jenrick. Jenrick, a former immigration minister, is the sole candidate advocating for the UK’s withdrawal from the ECHR if elected prime minister.

Johnson also commented on international affairs, stating that Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if Donald Trump were US president. These remarks coincide with the upcoming release of his new book, “Unleashed,” on October 10.

In his memoir, serialised in national newspapers, Johnson revealed several significant moments from his time in office. He disclosed plans to potentially invade the Netherlands to seize COVID-19 vaccines, believing they rightfully belonged to the UK since they were developed there.

Additionally, Johnson mentioned his attempt to persuade Prince Harry to remain in the UK, describing his efforts as a “manly pep talk” that ultimately failed.

Johnson also claimed that the Conservative Party would have won the July election had he remained as leader.
