Melania Trump supports abortion rights in new memoir

Melania Trump reveals in her upcoming memoir that she supports a woman’s right to choose regarding abortion. The former first lady states she has held this belief throughout her adult life.

An advance copy of her book, titled ‘Melania’, has been obtained, with the release scheduled for Tuesday. In it, she expresses views on abortion that differ starkly from those of her husband, former President Donald Trump, and the current Republican nominee.

“It is crucial that women have the autonomy to decide about having children based on their own beliefs, without government intervention or pressure,” she writes.

“Why should anyone other than the woman herself determine what she does with her body? A woman’s fundamental right to individual liberty grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes,” she continues.

“Restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy denies her control over her own body,” she says. “I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life.”

This revelation comes just one month before her husband faces Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in the presidential election, with abortion rights being a pivotal issue for voters. Harris advocates for pro-choice policies, while Trump has struggled to articulate a clear stance on the matter.

Trump has claimed credit for contributing to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that federally protected the right to abortion. During his presidency, Trump appointed three conservative justices who voted to overturn Roe in 2022. He has stated he has no regrets over these appointments.

The overturning has been celebrated by the anti-abortion faction of the Republican Party, but the former president has recently recognized the GOP’s vulnerability on this issue. Since the 2022 ruling, Democrats have secured a series of election victories by campaigning on abortion rights. Analysts believe Republicans underperformed in the 2022 midterms due to this issue.

In August, Trump mentioned he might vote to end Florida’s six-week abortion ban in an upcoming referendum. Days later, after backlash from the anti-abortion wing of his party, he reversed his statement, saying he wouldn’t vote to overturn the six-week limit. This Tuesday, Trump stated he would veto a federal abortion ban, avoiding a clear stance previously.

In her memoir, Melania mentions that “occasional political disagreements” with her husband are “part of our relationship,” and she prefers addressing them privately rather than publicly challenging him. Later in the book, she explains her support for abortion rights.

“I have always believed it is essential for people to take care of themselves first,” she says. “It’s a straightforward concept; we all have fundamental rights, including the right to enjoy our lives.” “We are all entitled to a gratifying and dignified existence. This common-sense approach applies to a woman’s natural right to make decisions about her own body and health.”
