Six-day effort to rescue trapped dog in Halifax continues

Volunteers strive to save trapped dog in Halifax as effort continues

A large-scale rescue effort to save a small dog trapped underground in Halifax has continued for six days. Volunteers have been tirelessly working around the clock to rescue a Jack Russell named Rose.

The dog reportedly became trapped in an underground cave last Thursday. Initially, the fire service responded but left the task to workers equipped with power tools, who have been diligently attempting to reach Rose.

Volunteers have come from places as far as Scotland and Lancashire to assist in West Yorkshire. The anxious owner remains on site as the rescue operation proceeds.

On Tuesday, an appeal was made for experienced potholers to join the effort. A volunteer posted on Facebook, seeking smaller-built individuals skilled in potholing. “We are closer than ever to the dog but need help from any pothole lads willing to enter the cave,” the post read.

There are concerns it might take another 48 hours to reach Rose, with a recent update indicating 14 feet of solid stone still to be cleared. Rose is believed to be stuck in a narrow gap underground in Mixenden, near Halifax.

The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service first responded at 3.15pm on Thursday, 26 September. A spokesperson stated, “Cameras were used to search for the dog. On the first attempt, it was not visible. The second attempt revealed a glimpse, but the cave narrowed to 12 inches at its widest. Entry was impossible.”

The spokesperson added, “Rescuing the animal required drilling, which could jeopardise the structural integrity of the area. We left the rescue to those present.”

Volunteers have since called for companies with cranes and drilling equipment to assist. One man’s expensive machine broke during the rescue efforts.

Ben, a volunteer whose partner is about to give birth, shared online, “We’ve been working non-stop since Friday afternoon. We can now see the dog and provide food to her. It’s taken a lot of hard work from everyone involved. I need to rest for tomorrow, as my daughter is about to be born.”

Early Monday morning, a volunteer reported hearing the dog barking around 2.30am. They managed to drop water down to Rose, and later, food was also supplied.
