Mexican soldiers shot and killed six migrants who were part of a group of 33 travelling in a pick-up truck. The migrants attempted to evade a military patrol, leading to the incident, according to a statement from the defence ministry. On Tuesday evening, another 10 migrants sustained injuries. The group included nationals from Egypt, Nepal, Cuba, India, and Pakistan.
The incident occurred near the town of Huixtla, roughly 40 km from Tapachula, close to the Guatemalan border. The pick-up truck was accompanied by two other vehicles resembling those used by local criminal groups. Soldiers reported hearing explosions, prompting two officers to open fire.
The defence ministry stated that the two soldiers involved have been relieved of their duties and reported to federal prosecutors. A military tribunal is also investigating the situation. The ministry emphasised its commitment to adhering to the rule of law, maintaining a zero-impunity policy, and cooperating with civil authorities to clarify the events.

Coordination efforts with the foreign ministry and relevant embassies are underway. Tapachula, located in southern Chiapas state, serves as a key entry point for many migrants heading towards the United States, often fleeing violence and poverty. Chiapas has experienced conflicts this year between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Sinaloa Cartel, causing around 600 people to flee to Guatemala in July due to turf wars.
