Daniel Day-Lewis returns to screen in son’s debut film

Daniel Day-Lewis is ending his seven-year acting hiatus to star in his son’s directorial debut. As the only actor to have won three best actor Oscars, Day-Lewis’ absence has been felt strongly in the film industry. His return is highly anticipated.

Day-Lewis retired in 2017, leaving many cinema enthusiasts disappointed. However, he will now grace the screen again in his son Ronan Day-Lewis’ first film.

The new project, Anemone, is a collaboration between Focus Features and Plan B. Co-written by the father-son team, the film delves into the dynamics of fathers, sons, and brothers. This marks Day-Lewis’ first role since Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2017 film, Phantom Thread.

Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski expressed excitement about working with Ronan Day-Lewis on his debut feature. “They have crafted an exceptional script, and we are thrilled to bring their vision to audiences,” he said.

Ronan, 26, is primarily a painter and visual artist, suggesting the film will be visually stunning, enhanced by his father’s extraordinary talent.

In 2017, Day-Lewis announced his retirement from acting for undisclosed reasons. At the time, his representative stated that Day-Lewis was thankful for his collaborators and audience. It was a private decision, and no further comments were made.

In an interview with W magazine, the actor explained his decision to retire, saying he did not initially plan to stop acting. Before making Phantom Thread, he felt a strong urge to quit, which he described as a compulsion he had to follow.
