Boy’s dog waste business funds kitten adoption

Luca adopts kitten with earnings from dog waste business

A young boy from Rhode Island has turned his love for animals into a profitable venture, allowing him to adopt a kitten. Luca Aprin, a six-year-old from Warwick, used earnings from his dog waste collection business, “Poopa Scoopa Luca,” to bring home Pebble, a shelter cat.

Luca understands the importance of his work, acknowledging that many people dislike cleaning up after their dogs. “People hate picking up dog poop,” he said. “I don’t mind that.”

He charges $15 for his services, or $20 for multiple dogs, ensuring local yards are free of dog waste. “It’s fun. I love cleaning. It’s like one of my favourite things,” he shared.

Luca began his journey by volunteering at a local animal shelter where his mother, Robyn Bouchard, works. Together, they have fostered or found homes for 98 rescue animals. “He is the first person to walk into the building, he’ll immediately start folding laundry. He’ll sweep and mop the floors,” Bouchard said.

Luca met Pebble at the shelter and wanted to adopt her. However, his volunteer work didn’t provide the funds needed for adoption fees and pet expenses. “He asked me, ‘What can I do to raise money and how can I raise money to adopt this kitten?’ Because he just felt like he couldn’t live without her,” Bouchard shared.

Luca quickly devised a plan and started his business. After several weeks of hard work, he earned enough money to adopt Pebble. Luca is now looking for more ways to earn money to help save more animals. “I have the coolest kid in the entire world honestly. To be so aware of the rescue crisis in the state and overall in the country I think that’s pretty unique,” Bouchard said.
