Miller, a delivery truck driver, committed the shootings on August 5, 1999, in Pelham, Alabama. He fatally shot Holdbrooks, 32, and Yancy, 28, at Ferguson Enterprises, then drove to Post Airgas and killed Jarvis, 39. Witnesses testified that Miller was paranoid and believed his co-workers were gossiping about him. All three men were shot multiple times.
Initially, Miller pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity but later withdrew this plea. A defence psychiatrist testified that while Miller was mentally ill, his condition was not severe enough for an insanity defence. Jurors took 20 minutes to convict Miller and recommended the death penalty by a 10-2 vote.
In 2022, the state halted an earlier execution attempt after being unable to establish an IV line for the 351-pound inmate. Miller had initially contested the nitrogen gas protocol but dropped his lawsuit after reaching a settlement with the state.
