Former Kerry aide arrested over $1.5m bounced cheque at Vegas casino
Daniel Burrell caught after $1.5m cheque bounces at Las Vegas casino
Late Friday morning, former John Kerry staffer Daniel Burrell was apprehended on Nantucket for allegedly bouncing a $1.5 million cheque at a Las Vegas casino. His arrest occurred just a day after his island mansion was auctioned off due to foreclosure.
Law enforcement officials in Colorado and Nevada had been searching for Burrell, who issued the bad cheque at the casino. Following the sale of his Nantucket estate for $12.52 million, authorities moved in.
Previously, Burrell faced warrants in Pitkin County, Colorado, for allegedly defaulting on over $75 million in loans used for divorce settlements, a yacht, and luxury homes.

Burrell’s legal troubles have been ongoing. He served on the Clinton administration’s Domestic Policy Council from 2000 to 2001 and was a campaign finance assistant for John Kerry during his 2004 presidential bid, later working as a regional finance staffer in California.
In November, First Western Bank sued Burrell for allegedly defaulting on $56 million in loans. By April 2024, Alpine Bank claimed he owed $18 million on an $18.5 million loan, resulting in an online foreclosure auction of his Aspen estate. The bank acquired the property for $24.6 million.
A spokesperson for Kerry expressed hope for Burrell and his family’s peace and healing. Burrell founded the Burrell Group, an investment firm specialising in commercial offices, multi-family residences, medical facilities, and student housing.

Burrell’s case over the casino debt will be heard by Las Vegas Justice Court early next week. His lawyer, Andrew Fritz, stated Burrell could not immediately pay the $10,000 bail and was held overnight at the Nantucket Police Department.
Fritz mentioned Burrell’s arrest was due to debts owed to a Las Vegas casino. Additionally, Burrell had faced other legal issues on Nantucket, including petty theft and disputes with a local property manager. Efforts to contact the Nantucket County Sheriff’s Department for comment were unsuccessful.
