Birmingham shooting leaves 4 dead, 17 injured; White House condemns violence

On Sunday, the White House condemned gun violence following a mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, which resulted in four fatalities and at least 17 injuries on Saturday night. Several people lost their lives, and many others were injured in downtown Birmingham. The nation is once again gripped by horror as another community faces the devastating impact of gun violence, stated Stef Feldman, Gun Violence Prevention Director.

President Biden and Vice President Harris are extending their prayers to the families affected by this tragic incident, Feldman added. President Biden has directed coordination with federal, state, and local officials as investigations into the shooting continue, according to Feldman.

Americans should not have to endure such conditions. This situation cannot become normal. Over 400 mass shootings have occurred this year, causing trauma and destruction in communities. As President Biden often remarks: Enough is enough, Feldman emphasised. Three individuals were killed at the scene on Magnolia Avenue in the Five Points South area near the University of Alabama at Birmingham. A fourth victim succumbed to injuries at the university hospital, the Birmingham Police Department reported.

Police responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 11 p.m. Three of the four victims have been identified. Anitra Holloman, 21, of Bessemer; Tahj Booker, 27, of Birmingham; and Carlos McCain, 27, of Birmingham, were all pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth victim, an adult male, died at the hospital and awaits identification.

Detectives believe the shooting was not random but resulted from an isolated incident involving crossfire, stated the police. During a Sunday morning press conference, Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond indicated the shooting appeared to be a targeted hit. He added that the intended victim was among those killed.

The weapons used were fully automatic, and over 100 shell casings were found at the scene, along with other evidence, as per Thurmond. Evidence suggests multiple shooters were involved. Authorities are working to identify the target of the shooting and will review video surveillance. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin expressed the community’s responsibility to remove these shooters from the streets.

Currently, no suspects are in custody. Chief Thurmond extended condolences to the victims and their families, acknowledging the profound impact on 21 individuals and their families. Authorities urge the public to provide any information that could lead to an arrest.
