Starting today, millions can schedule their flu and COVID vaccines, a move officials hope will reduce strain on the health service as winter approaches. NHS England has voiced concerns about a possible “tripledemic” involving flu, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Bookings open at 9am on Monday via the NHS website, app, or by calling 119.
Eligibility for the free jabs includes adults aged 65 and over, long-term care home residents, individuals in clinical risk groups, frontline social care workers, and carers for the elderly or disabled. Pregnant women, toddlers, and children up to year 11 are also eligible for the flu jab. Additionally, children from six months to 18 years in clinical risk groups are invited for the vaccine. For the first time, the NHS will offer an RSV vaccine this autumn.
The RSV vaccine is available to pregnant women from their 28th week to protect their newborns, and to older adults aged 75 to 79.

Michelle Kane, director for vaccinations at NHS England, stated, “We know that these vaccinations help more people stay well and out of hospital during the winter, which is particularly crucial with the NHS facing significant pressure.” The UK Health Security Agency also emphasized the importance of these vaccines for older people and young children, who are more likely to need hospital care due to the flu.

Dr Julie Yates, deputy director for immunisation programmes at the agency, advised, “If you are pregnant or have a long-term condition, you should be offered the vaccines. If unsure, please consult with a trusted nurse or doctor.”
