Inbred family member speaks out on abuse and reconciliation
Whittaker family member details abuse and mends ties with YouTuber Mark Laita
A relative of America’s so-called ‘most inbred’ Whittaker family has opened up about their experiences and the abuse they have faced.
The Whittaker family gained attention through photographer Mark Laita, who began documenting their lives on YouTube.
Mark’s videos have amassed millions of views. However, a disagreement arose when the Whittakers misled him about money, causing a rift. They have since reconciled after the family apologised.
In a recent video uploaded earlier this month, Larry Whittaker shakes Mark’s hand, apologising for past actions: “It’s been a long time. I’m sorry for what they’ve done to you and I want to tell the whole world that I’m sorry for what they done.”
During the hour-long video, Mark converses with the Whittaker family’s cousin John, who shared the family’s history of mistreatment.
“Growing up, people would throw eggs and stuff at the house,” John recounted. “They would scream and shout all night. People were just rude.”
John mentioned the family’s windows had been broken, and they were terrorised. He returned to the area at 15 and ‘put a stop to a lot of stuff.’
John and his brother Jason are protective of the family. On Mark’s first visit, Jason even pulled a gun on him.
Now, Mark is considered a friend by the Whittakers, understanding he means no harm.
The Whittakers are three siblings named Lorraine, Timmy, and Ray and they are famously known as America’s most inbred family.

Brandon and Luis, BJ’s sons and Larry Whittaker’s grandchildren, also shared their experiences. Luis recalled a rough patch around age six when he was placed in foster care.
He returned after his seventh birthday but couldn’t visit his grandpa due to an incident involving their stepdad.
Brandon, on the other hand, said he ‘couldn’t ask for a better childhood.’
