Historic nuclear bunker in Derbyshire up for auction at £15,000

1950s nuclear bunker in Derbyshire with original features available for auction

The new owner of a nuclear bunker now available for auction will need to be selective about their guests if a global catastrophe occurs.

Built in the 1950s, the facility has just two rooms. Estate agents describe the “cosy” Royal Observer Post, one of 1,500 constructed after the Second World War, as capable of housing only three individuals.

The bunker was designed to endure a nuclear strike from Russia and accommodate observers who would report on the aftermath. They were meant to have sufficient food and water to last two weeks in the sealed shelter.

Fortunately, the bunker was never utilised and is now up for sale at a property auction with a guide price of £15,000-£20,000.

It includes the original telephone and instructions for using equipment in the event of an attack, like a hand-operated siren.

Modern additions to the bunker, which can only be accessed by a ladder, feature a log burner, curtains, and a chemical toilet.

Located beneath a farmer’s field in Wormhill, Derbyshire Dales, the storage and landing area measures 7ft x 2ft, while the living and sleeping area is 14ft x 7ft.

This bunker is one of the few remaining originals, as most were sold to telecom companies and converted into phone masts.
