The police noted that her unexplained absence and lack of communication were alarming. Attempts to reach her by phone failed, and searches of her bank and credit card records revealed no useful information. By 3:12 PM on the same day, she was officially listed as missing.
An extensive investigation led police to suspect Schubert’s involvement in her disappearance. He was arrested on the evening of 5 September and charged with her murder following the recovery of her remains.
Melissa’s family has expressed their grief on social media. Her mother, Valentin Jubane, wrote on Facebook, expressing her pain and faith in justice and divine intervention. A cousin, Onilobes Allan, described Melissa as down-to-earth, funny, and helpful, calling for government protection for good citizens and justice for Melissa.
